Introduction to ICT (Theory)

CO1. Analyse the importance of  number  representation  in computer systems.

CO2. Evaluate the role of different software and their applications in industry.

CO3. Examine the multifaceted nature of e-commerce and architectural principles of cloud computing.

CO4. Analyse the significance of data communication and critically assess the implications of computer security and cyber laws in daily life.

CO5. Examine various forms of IPRs   and   raise   awareness about copyright and patents.

CO6.Contribute  effectively  in course-specific interaction

Information & Data Representation:

Data and Information, Type of Data, Information System, Computer Based Information System. History and Generations of Computer, Type of Computers, Block Diagram of a Computer, Components  of  a  Computer  System.  Data  Representation:  Number Systems  and  their conversions (Binary, Octal, Decimal, Hexadecimal), Computer Arithmetic, ‘+’, ‘–’, ‘*’, ‘/’. Signed and Unsigned Number Representation in Binary Form, ASCII Code.

Types of Software: System Software, Application Software, Proprietary Software, Freeware Software, Public Domain Software, Open Source Software, Simulation Software.

Word Processing Software and its features, character formatting, paragraph formatting, Page formatting, Mail Merge, Spelling & Grammar checking.

Spreadsheet Software and its features, workbooks and worksheets, cell referencing (Relative, Absolute, Mixed), filling series, data sort, Functions- Date & Time, Maths, Text, Charts

Presentation Software: Presentation tips, components of slide, slide templates, master slide, presentation views, transition and animations.

Introduction to E-Commerce and Cloud Computing:

Introduction to E-Commerce Models and M-Commerce, E-Learning, E-Governance, E-Banking and M-Banking, E-Business Model – E-Marketing, E-Locker, Digital Signature, Modes of Online Payment and Security Options. Introduction to Cloud Computing: - Concept, Cloud Types-IAAS, SAAS, PAAS, Services and Applications.

Definition of Computer Network, Type of Networks: Local Area Networks (LAN), Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN). Network Topologies: Bus, Tree, Star, Mesh, Hybrid. Ethernet, Bluetooth, Mobile Networking. Difference between Intranet and Internet. Computer Security and Cyber Laws:

Computer Security: Computer Viruses, Malicious Software, Antivirus, Anti-Spyware Software, Firewall, Hijack, Hacking.

Cyber Laws: Introduction to Cyber Laws, Cyber Crime, Introduction to IT Act Clause 66.

Introduction to Intellectual Property Right (IPR), Economic Importance of IPR. IPR in India and World: TRIPS, WIPO.

Copyrights: Introduction, Works protected under copyright law, Rights, Transfer of Copyright, Infringement and Remedies.

Patents: Objectives, Rights, Patent Act 1970 and its Amendments. Patentability, Non Patentable Subjects, Procedure of Obtaining Patents, Working of Patents. Infringement and Remedies. Computer Software and Intellectual Property, Database and Data Protection, Protection of Semi-Conductor Chips, Domain Name Protection.
