Objective of the workshop/seminar/activity: to introduce Free and open-source software to the students in order to gain their maximum advantage.
The department organized a one-day workshop on “FOSS Technologies” on 18/9/2014, Thursday.The team was headed by Mr. G. T. Rao, Founder, FOSS Yatra, Hyderabad. The students were introduced to the latest Free and open-source software available in the market. The team briefed the students about the advantage of using FOSS software. The workshop was very interesting wherein the students learnt about Linux operating system “Ubuntu”. The workshop was divided into three sessions, covering various topics related to FOSS technology.
In the first session topics like the differences between free and proprietary software, advantages of FOSS, disadvantages between paid and open source software etc were taken up.
The second session was very important one, in which nearly thousands of applications present on store of “ubuntu” were discussed. Students were taught how to use different applications including the very powerful Duckduckgo.com.
In the third session, the installation of “ubuntu” was shown and a very interesting query round was performed where interesting gifts were also distributed. The setup file of ubuntu was given to every student presented in the hall.
The students enjoyed the whole experience. The workshop was very learning one wherein practical aspect of FOSS technology was also covered.
Outcome of the activity/event/seminar/workshop: the students learned about “FOSS Technologies” and working on the same.
