This course aims to provide the practical knowledge about Colour relationships, composition, and Colour mixture. Students will study the effects of Colour on the development of design as well as the psychology of Colour and its power to deliver effective marketing messages.
Introduction to colours- Origin & History. Colour palettes: mixing of primary, secondary and tertiary colours, tints, tones and shades, Colour wheel. Complementary, split complementary analogous, warm and cool colours.
Introduction to brushes. Brief history. Types of brushes and their usages.
RGB colours and CMYK colours: hue, value, intensity/Chroma/saturation, spectrum. Introduction to Colour mediums like pencil colour, poster colours, water colours, dry pastel colours, oil colours, etc.
Lighting and Colour, Aspects of Colour, Colour and Pigment. Theme Illustrations (monochromatic scheme, polychromatic scheme, acro-chromatic scheme- Black & white scheme).
Introduction to elements of graphic design- basic elements, relational elements and intentional elements.
Basic Elements- point, line, plane, space, shape, form, colour, texture.
Relational Elements- alignment, direction, visual thrust, figure and ground, visual gravity.
Intentional Elements- aesthetic, content, function.
Introduction to Typography. Definition of Type Faces and Fonts. Difference between Type Faces and Fonts. Classification- Serif, Script, Display, Proportional vs. Mono-spaced. Weight and Styles and Mood.
Colour in practice: colour in advertising and graphic design & colours used in logos, print ads, layouts. Application of colour in print media.
